WebGIS Developer
TL;DR
A role in a small team with serious impact and autonomy to help build our web-based transportation planning platform.
A company with a purpose: Podaris was founded in the belief that better transportation planning tools can create a better world.
A perfect role for someone wanting to transition from a pure GIS or transport/urban planning background to something closer to software engineering.
A truly flexible environment: set your own hours, your own remote location, and directly influence tools and technologies used.
Remote: UK-based, with flexible work from anywhere.
About Podaris
Podaris is a fast-growing startup in the transport and urban planning sector, aiming to change the way the world plans its cities and transport systems. We have created a web app for collaborative transport planning which incorporates aspects of GIS, CAD, transport simulation, and more.
The platform is being used by customers around the world, from large-multinational private campus owners, to local authorities and transport operators. They use Podaris for everything from bus network redesigns, to the planning of new innovative multi-billion pound mass transit schemes.
Our small team makes for an inclusive, interdisciplinary, and intellectually stimulating environment. We value diversity and welcome candidates from non-traditional backgrounds. The mostly UK-based team has been working remotely since before the pandemic and offers true flexibility with an emphasis on work-life balance.
About the job
We're looking for a WebGIS Developer to join our growing team. You'll be able to make a big impact, joining a small but very enthusiastic team. Our platform is centred around a feature-rich collaborative single-page application that is built using technologies such as OpenLayers, Node.js, MongoDB, and Meteor.js. Your experience with spatial data analysis, GIS applications, and transportation modelling will be essential in helping us enhance our geospatial capabilities.
What will you do?
Develop and implement new geospatial features for our Javascript-based single page application.
Design and optimise spatial data structures and algorithms for transport network analysis and routing.
Create intuitive map-based interfaces for visualising and editing transport networks and urban infrastructure.
Process and integrate various transportation data formats and sources into our platform.
Develop spatial analysis tools for transportation planning and impact assessment.
Collaborate with the wider team to debug issues and support customers using the platform.
Contribute to the end-to-end lifecycle of features, from concept to UI to deployment to metrics to support.
About you
Essential
Solid experience with geospatial web development using modern Javascript and libraries such as OpenLayers, Leaflet, or Mapbox GL.
Strong understanding of GIS concepts, coordinate systems, spatial data formats, and geospatial algorithms.
Experience with processing and analysing transportation data, such as travel demand patterns, network flows, or accessibility metrics.
Familiarity with spatial databases and geographic data structures.
Self-motivated with a strong sense of ownership. You understand that startups are unpredictable environments and are comfortable with a degree of chaos.
Desirable
Experience with transport data formats such as OpenStreetMap, GTFS, and TransXchange.
Background in transport planning, urban planning, or transportation engineering.
Experience with transportation modelling or network analysis tools.
Knowledge of web-based visualisation techniques for complex spatial and temporal data.
Experience working in a fast-paced, high-growth, technology-focused organisation.
What we offer
Rare opportunity to join a fast-growing and dynamic mobility software startup.
A meaningful equity component.
Flexible work from anywhere policy.
Remote-first autonomous team.
A human hiring process (no LeetCode).
33 days of paid annual leave (inclusive of public holidays)
As a small team, we can consider putting in place other benefits if important to you - please ask!
